We are pleased to solicit your support for the Houston Dad's Day 5K Walk/Run. Now in its 11th year, we are focused 100% on efforts to motivate men toward early detection in the fight against prostate cancer. Held on Father’s Day weekend (Saturday, June 19 th this year), it’s proved to be a good time to encourage men and their families to gather for fun and exercise. We desire to attract new strategic relationships with sponsors and partners who are focused on men and/or the disease.

Prostate cancer strikes as many men, and causes almost as many deaths, as breast cancer does in women. It afflicts one in six men, and it is second only to lung cancer in causing male deaths from cancer. Our 5K event aims to boost awareness and education, as a way to encourage men to face this risk proactively -- to get a check-up! We are pleased to report growing success!

"Lift-off" is a fair way to describe remarkable growth in our 5K attendance in 2009, up a whopping 40% over 2008. That says we are on the right track, and that we have a winning team with great sponsors. After 10 years, it seems clear we are learning how to deliver a good event. As a result, we aim for the 2010 event to grow another 40% -- at least -- since its purpose is vitally important.

Building awareness is slow work, requiring a focus on novel ways to multiply community support. Proceeds are used to finance outreach in Houston, including active participation in corporate and community health fairs, plus funding groups offering check-ups to men in under-served areas of Houston. Our web site informs men of freecheck-ups offered by local hospitals in September.

We will appreciate your help for an even bigger "lift-off" in 2010, “to run prostate cancer out-of-town,” and by reminding and encouraging men to get checkups. Early detection can indeed save lives.
